A bibliography should lead back to the evidence

A useful bibliography identifies the exact work and explains which claim it supports. A long reference list cannot replace checking the relevant passage, dataset or method.

A conference DOI answers an identity question

A DOI helps identify a conference object or paper. Establishing its review process requires the relevant venue, track and publication policy; metadata alone cannot describe how the work was evaluated.

A letter is an encounter, not a whole life

Letters can reveal what a person communicated to a particular recipient at a particular time. A biographer still has to distinguish those words from broader claims about motives, relationships or private belief.

A registered clinical trial is not a treatment result

A registration describes a study and its planned questions. Evidence about effects requires results, study design and interpretation; an identifier alone cannot establish that a treatment works.

A terrace is also a drainage decision

Terraces manage runoff as well as slope. Their outlets, soil conditions, maintenance and place in a wider conservation system matter as much as the visible steps.

A timestamp needs a version beside it

An access timestamp records when you fetched a resource. A version identifies which content you used. Keeping both makes a changing reference easier to audit.

A treaty signature is not always ratification

When signature is subject to ratification, it does not itself establish consent to be bound. Check the treaty's rules, the recorded action and entry into force.

An encyclopedia can be the beginning of a good search

Use an encyclopedia to understand a topic and locate its debates. Cite its own analysis where appropriate, and follow underlying references when your question depends on a specific observation, document or result.

DNA in the water is a clue with a travel history

Environmental DNA can identify genetic material in a sample. Interpreting the location and abundance of the organisms requires evidence about transport, decay, sampling and detection error.

Desalination still has to account for the salt

Desalination separates water and salts into different streams. Fresh product water leaves a more concentrated residual stream, which remains part of the system's energy and disposal problem.

How an ear stone can reveal a fish's age

Otolith growth layers can support fish-age estimates, but the layers need species-specific interpretation and validation. Repeated agreement between readers measures consistency, not automatically truth.

How can lake mud remember a forest?

Pollen preserved in dated sediment layers can reveal changes in vegetation. Its interpretation becomes stronger when compared with charcoal, chronology and other environmental evidence.

Membership means member of which body?

Membership in an international organization, membership in one of its organs and participation as an observer are distinct statuses. Name the body and date.

Seawater is more than table salt in water

Seawater contains a mixture of dissolved ions. Sodium and chloride dominate, but salinity describes their combined concentration with other dissolved salts, not just sodium chloride.

The cistern is only half the water system

A storage tank cannot collect more water than its catchment supplies. Rainfall timing, collection losses, demand and maintenance determine whether a cistern is useful.

The date on a newspaper is not always the event date

Record the issue date separately from the event date described in an article. A retrospective, reprinted report or later correction can otherwise be placed on the wrong timeline.

The salt damage you cannot judge from a clean surface

Salt deterioration depends on moisture, pore structure and the salts present. A clean-looking surface does not establish that a historic material is stable or that a cleaning treatment is suitable.

The two dates on a Sanborn map

An atlas first printed in one year and corrected later is not an unchanged snapshot of its original date. Inspect its correction record.

Two classrooms can hide a confound

If one teacher delivers the new programme and another teaches the comparison group, the programme and teacher may be impossible to disentangle.

Which Leaves of Grass are you reading?

Whitman's title stayed familiar while its contents changed. Cite the edition when comparing poems, wording, arrangement or pagination.

Why a busier queue can deliver more slowly

For a stable system, average work in progress equals throughput rate times average flow time. Starting more work does not by itself increase completion capacity.

Why an average visit can describe almost nobody

A few extreme values can pull a mean far from the middle observation. Report the median, sample size and distribution alongside the mean when describing uneven visit durations.
