Scope of this subject
Since 1918 the term has been used for appointees to an administrature apostolic, a provisional form of diocese. The term is also used for administrators appointed by the Pope to govern ecclesiastical institutions under similar circumstances. Here are entered works dealing with persons appointed by the Pope to administer a diocese when its bishop is prohibited or prevented from exercising his office, or when a diocese is vacant and there is no chapter to elect a vicar capitular.
